“Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. They said therefore to him, “You aren’t also one of his disciples, are you?” He denied it, and said, “I am not.””
What does John 18:25 mean?
Peter is huddled by a charcoal fire in the courtyard while Jesus is being questioned inside, and someone challenges him about being a follower. The question itself carries doubt, almost inviting him to simply deny it, and Peter does exactly that. What makes this moment so striking is that Peter had insisted just hours earlier he'd die alongside Jesus, yet here he's distancing himself from even knowing him. The warmth of the fire offers physical comfort while his words reveal an inner coldness, a fear that overwhelms his earlier brave declarations.
