What does John 18:23 mean?

Jesus is making a logical appeal in the moment a guard has just struck him across the face. He's asking a simple question: if he's done something wrong, let there be evidence and a fair process. But if he's done nothing wrong, why use violence? There's a profound dignity here, even in his vulnerability. Rather than fight back or curse his attackers, Jesus points out the injustice of the moment, inviting reflection. For many of us, this shows how we can stand firm in our integrity without becoming hard or bitter, and how appealing to someone's conscience can matter more than any other response.
