What does John 17:5 mean?

Jesus is asking his Father to restore him to the divine glory he shared before he came to earth. In becoming human, he set aside the full expression of his heavenly nature, and now as his earthly mission nears completion, he's asking to return to that place of honor and presence with God. This prayer reveals both his humble acceptance of the incarnation (taking on human form) and his confidence that his work on earth has been accomplished. For those listening then and now, it's a profound reminder that Jesus willingly left behind everything to be with us, and that his return to the Father isn't an escape but a completion of his purpose.
