John 16:25
“I have spoken these things to you in figures of speech. But the time is coming when I will no more speak to you in figures of speech, but will tell you plainly about the Father.”
What does John 16:25 mean?
Jesus is acknowledging that much of what he's taught—through parables, metaphors, and symbolic language—has been hard to fully grasp. He's promising his disciples that after his resurrection and the coming of the Holy Spirit, they'll understand God the Father more directly and clearly, without needing everything wrapped in puzzles and stories. This is tender encouragement for people who felt confused or frustrated by Jesus's teaching style. He's not saying his parables were mistakes, but rather that they were a temporary form of communication suited to that moment. Once the Spirit comes to live in them, they'll have a kind of inner knowing of God's nature and love that goes deeper than words alone.
