John 16:23

What does John 16:23 mean?

Jesus is talking about a shift that happens after his resurrection and ascension, when his followers won't need to ask him questions face-to-face anymore because they'll have direct access to God through prayer. The promise isn't that God will give you literally anything you want, but rather that when you ask the Father in Jesus' name (meaning with his character and purposes in mind), your deepest needs will be met because you're connected to him through Jesus. It's an invitation to stop thinking of prayer as something distant or complicated and to trust that God listens to those who come to him through Christ. This verse speaks directly to anyone who worries their prayers don't matter or that God is too far away to hear them.
