β€œThey will put you out of the synagogues. Yes, the time comes that whoever kills you will think that he offers service to God.”

What does John 16:2 mean?

Jesus is preparing his followers for real persecution ahead, and this warning became brutally true in the early centuries. His disciples would be expelled from Jewish communities and eventually face execution by people genuinely convinced they were doing God's will, which shows how sincerely held beliefs can become twisted into justification for violence. This difficult verse matters because it acknowledges that good intentions don't guarantee good actions, and it calls us to examine our own hearts. If you're facing rejection or misunderstanding for your faith, this reminds you that you're not alone in that struggle, and that opposition doesn't mean God has abandoned you.
