John 16:19

Therefore Jesus perceived that they wanted to ask him, and he said to them, “Do you inquire among yourselves concerning this, that I said, ‘A little while, and you won’t see me, and again a little while, and you will see me?’

What does John 16:19 mean?

Jesus had just told his disciples something puzzling: he would be leaving them for "a little while," then returning. They were confused and starting to whisper questions to each other, but before anyone could speak up, Jesus gently called them out. He knew what was troubling them without being told. This moment shows both Jesus's awareness of what people carry in their hearts and his patience with confusion. The disciples weren't wrong to be uncertain about what lay ahead, and Jesus doesn't shame them for it. Instead, he's inviting them into honesty about their doubts so he can help them understand. Sometimes when we're struggling to make sense of something difficult, it helps just to name it out loud, and Jesus is making space for that here.
