John 16:17
“Some of his disciples therefore said to one another, “What is this that he says to us, ‘A little while, and you won’t see me, and again a little while, and you will see me;’ and, ‘Because I go to the Father’ ?””
What does John 16:17 mean?
The disciples are confused and talking among themselves after Jesus has just told them he's leaving them soon, then returning. Jesus is speaking about his imminent death and resurrection, but his words sound cryptic and contradictory to people who don't yet understand what's about to happen. Their bewilderment reflects a very human response to confusing news, especially when someone we love speaks in ways that don't quite add up. By showing us their struggle to understand, John reminds us that doubt and confusion are normal when we're facing something we've never experienced before.
