John 15:2
“Every branch in me that doesn’t bear fruit, he takes away. Every branch that bears fruit, he prunes, that it may bear more fruit.”
What does John 15:2 mean?
Jesus is describing what happens to those who are connected to him, using the image of a grapevine. The branches that don't produce fruit get removed entirely, which sounds harsh, but the second part softens this with hope: the branches that are growing and bearing fruit aren't left alone either. Instead, they get pruned, which means God actively cuts away parts of them so they'll grow even more abundantly. This speaks to two different spiritual paths. One leads to being separated from God's life-giving presence. The other leads somewhere harder in the short term but better in the long run: God doesn't let us coast or become overgrown with what doesn't matter. He trims away what's unproductive in our lives, sometimes through difficulty or loss, so we can flourish more deeply. If you're going through a season of being "pruned," this verse suggests it comes from a gardener's care, not punishment.
