John 14:9

Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you such a long time, and do you not know me, Philip? He who has seen me has seen the Father. How do you say, ‘Show us the Father?’

What does John 14:9 mean?

Philip had just asked Jesus to show them God the Father, not realizing that he was already looking at him. Jesus gently points out that after spending so much time together, Philip should understand that knowing Jesus means knowing what God is like. When we see Jesus' compassion, his sacrifice, his justice, and his love in the Gospels, we're seeing the character and heart of God himself. This doesn't mean Jesus and God are identical in every way, but rather that Jesus perfectly reveals who God is and what he cares about, so there's no need to look elsewhere to understand the Father's nature.
