What does John 13:3 mean?

In this quiet moment before washing his disciples' feet, John pauses to tell us what Jesus knew about himself. Jesus was fully aware of his divine origin, his complete authority, and his destiny to return to God. Yet instead of using this knowledge to demand honor or distance himself from others, he was about to kneel down and perform the most humble task a servant could do. The verse sets up a stunning contrast: the one with everything in his hands chooses to empty himself in service to people he loved.
