John 13:20
“Most certainly I tell you, he who receives whomever I send, receives me; and he who receives me, receives him who sent me.””
What does John 13:20 mean?
When Jesus says this at the Last Supper, he's affirming the dignity and importance of his disciples' future work. He's telling them that when they go out in his name, representing him and his mission, they carry his authority and presence with them. To welcome them is to welcome Jesus himself, and to welcome Jesus is to welcome God the Father. This matters deeply for anyone who feels small or uncertain about their role in faith. It means your acts of kindness, your witness, your willingness to serve others in Jesus's name—these aren't insignificant gestures. They're moments where Jesus himself is somehow present and recognized. It also cuts the other way: how we treat those who come to us speaking on Jesus's behalf, or simply in his spirit, reflects how we're treating Jesus.
