What does John 13:18 mean?
Jesus knew from the beginning that one of his closest followers would betray him, and he's acknowledging that painful reality here. The quote he uses is from Psalm 41, describing someone who shares intimate meals with you but then turns against you, which makes the betrayal cut even deeper. Jesus isn't suggesting that Judas had no choice, but rather that God's plans would unfold even through human betrayal, and the ancient scriptures had already spoken of this kind of hurt.
