What does John 12:40 mean?
This verse, quoted from the prophet Isaiah, describes a spiritual reality that Jesus observed in his own time: some people were so resistant to God's truth that they couldn't—or wouldn't—receive it, even when they witnessed his miracles firsthand. The "blinding" and "hardening" aren't arbitrary punishments but rather the natural consequence of repeatedly turning away from light; when we reject truth long enough, we become less able to recognize it.
