“Father, glorify your name!” Then there came a voice out of the sky, saying, “I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.””
What does John 12:28 mean?
Jesus speaks these words as he faces his approaching crucifixion, knowing that his death will seem like defeat but will actually become the moment of his greatest glory. When he asks the Father to glorify his name, he's asking God to reveal his character and power through what's about to happen, even though it will look like tragedy and failure to those watching. The Father's response is striking: he says he has already glorified his name (through Jesus's ministry and miracles so far) and will do so again (through the resurrection and everything that follows). It's a promise that God's plan isn't derailed by suffering or loss, and that apparent endings can actually be divine new beginnings.
