John 11:47
“The chief priests therefore and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said, “What are we doing? For this man does many signs.”
What does John 11:47 mean?
The religious leaders in Jerusalem were alarmed. Jesus had just raised Lazarus from the dead, and word was spreading through the city. The Pharisees and chief priests called an emergency meeting because they recognized that Jesus's miracles were undeniable and were winning him followers, which threatened their authority and influence. What makes this moment poignant is that they weren't gathering to investigate whether Jesus might be the Messiah, but rather to figure out how to stop him. They saw the signs, acknowledged the reality of what he was doing, but chose a different path. It's a reminder that witnessing something extraordinary doesn't automatically change hearts, sometimes fear and self-protection win out instead.
