“He who was dead came out, bound hand and foot with wrappings, and his face was wrapped around with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Free him, and let him go.””
What does John 11:44 mean?
Lazarus emerges from the tomb still tangled in the burial cloths that bound him, unable to move freely even though he's now alive. Jesus doesn't unwrap him himself but commands the people standing there to do it, giving them a role in completing what resurrection has begun. There's something deeply human and communal in this moment: yes, Jesus raised him from death, but the people who loved Lazarus get to participate in freeing him from those grave wrappings. It's a picture of how new life, even miraculous new life, often needs community around it to fully take shape and move forward.
