What does John 11:39 mean?
Martha's blunt response shows us something beautiful about grief and faith. She's not being disrespectful; she's being real. Lazarus has been dead four days, which in that climate meant decomposition was well underway, and she's gently trying to protect Jesus from something unpleasant and, frankly, from what seems like a pointless gesture. Yet Jesus is about to do something impossible, and Martha's objection reveals the gap between where she stands and where Jesus is inviting her to go. Her concern for the practical and the observable is natural and human. Jesus is asking her to trust him beyond what makes sense. In that moment, he's not asking her to ignore reality or pretend everything is fine; he's asking her to see that God's power can work within reality, not around it, and that sometimes faith means letting go of what we think we already know.
