John 11:28
“When she had said this, she went away, and called Mary, her sister, secretly, saying, “The Teacher is here, and is calling you.””
What does John 11:28 mean?
Martha has just told Jesus that she believes he is the Messiah, and now she's bringing her sister Mary to meet him. There's something tender in that word "secretly"—perhaps Martha wanted to give Mary a private moment, away from the crowd of mourners gathered at their home during their grief over their brother Lazarus. When Jesus calls for us, whether through circumstances, people, or our own hearts, sometimes the most meaningful encounters happen in quiet, personal moments. Martha's simple act of going to find her sister and inviting her to meet the Teacher shows how natural it should be for us to lead others toward Jesus, especially those closest to us.
