What does John 10:34 mean?
Jesus is responding to people who accused him of blasphemy for calling himself God's son. Rather than directly defending himself, he points to their own scriptures, quoting Psalm 82:6, to show that the language of being "gods" wasn't entirely foreign to Jewish tradition. His point is subtle: if the psalm could call human judges "gods" (because they acted with God's authority on earth), then calling himself God's son shouldn't automatically seem outrageous. He's essentially saying, "Look at your own holy writings before you condemn me for making this claim." It's a clever way of asking his accusers to think more carefully about what they believe and why.
