What does John 10:19 mean?

After Jesus claimed to be the good shepherd and spoke of laying down his life and taking it again, the people listening couldn't agree on what he meant. Some thought he was speaking truth; others believed he was either confused or dangerous. This kind of divided response followed Jesus throughout his ministry, because his words and claims didn't fit neatly into what people expected or wanted to hear. What's worth noticing is that division itself isn't presented here as a failure, but as an honest consequence of encountering something that demands a real decision from us. When we encounter truth that asks something of us, disagreement and wrestling often come first.
