What does John 1:27 mean?
John the Baptist is describing Jesus with profound humility, acknowledging that even though Jesus came after him in time, Jesus holds the greater position. The image of loosening someone's sandal strap was the job of the lowest household servant, so John is essentially saying he wouldn't consider himself worthy of even the humblest task in relation to Jesus. What makes this remarkable is that John had a huge following and significant influence, yet he recognized that Jesus was infinitely greater.
