What does John 1:22 mean?
John the Baptist is being questioned by religious authorities who want a straight answer about his identity. They've been sent to find out if he's the Messiah or someone else significant, and they need something concrete to report back. His response (in the next verse) is telling: he says he's simply "a voice of one crying in the wilderness," not the main event but a messenger preparing the way.
