Joel 2:13
“Tear your heart, and not your garments, and turn to Yahweh, your God; for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness, and relents from sending calamity.”
What does Joel 2:13 mean?
Joel is calling people away from empty religious gestures toward genuine transformation of the heart. Tearing clothes was a visible sign of mourning or repentance in that culture, but the prophet is saying that outward actions mean nothing without real inner change, real sorrow for wrongdoing, and real turning back to God. What makes this invitation so beautiful is what follows: God's character isn't harsh or waiting to punish.
