What does Joel 2:1 mean?
The prophet Joel is calling people to wake up and pay attention because God's judgment is coming, and it demands an urgent response. In ancient Israel, trumpet blasts summoned people for both celebration and warning, so this image would have immediately conveyed: something serious is happening, and you need to listen now. The "trembling" he describes isn't meant to terrify for its own sake, but to shake people out of complacency and turn them back toward God before it's too late. This comes in a moment when the people have grown distant from God, neglecting their relationship with him. Joel's call is ultimately an invitation to repentance, not a threat meant to crush hope.
