What does Joel 1:9 mean?
When hardship strikes—in this case, a devastating locust plague—even the rituals that connect people to God become impossible. The grain and wine needed for offerings simply don't exist anymore, so worship itself grinds to a halt. This leaves the priests, who depend on these offerings and find meaning in performing them, grieving not just the loss of provisions but the loss of their ability to do what they were called to do. Joel uses this image to show how thoroughly disaster disrupts everything, reaching even into the sacred spaces where people encounter God. It's a way of saying that when crisis is deep enough, we feel separated from the very things that usually sustain our faith.
