Joel 1:18
“How the animals groan! The herds of livestock are perplexed, because they have no pasture. Yes, the flocks of sheep are made desolate.”
What does Joel 1:18 mean?
When a severe drought strikes, it affects every living thing, not just human beings. Joel is describing the environmental devastation that comes when crops fail and water disappears, leaving animals confused and hungry because the land that normally sustains them has become barren. The animals' distress is real and visible, a sign of how complete the crisis has become. Sometimes we notice God's concern in Scripture for creation itself—the creatures groan because their basic needs aren't being met, and this suffering matters too.
