What does Job 9:31 mean?
Job is expressing something devastatingly raw here: even if he were to wash himself clean and stand before God, God would still push him back into the mud. His own clothes would recoil from him, as if even his garments reject him as unclean and worthless. This comes from Job's deepest despair, when he feels that nothing he does matters and no amount of effort can bridge the gap between himself and God. He's not making a logical argument so much as pouring out the ache of feeling utterly abandoned and beyond reach.
