What does Job 8:18 mean?

Bildad is describing what happens when someone turns away from God's ways: even the place where they once stood will seem to forget them, as if their former life denies they ever existed there. It's a vivid picture of how disconnection from God can feel like being erased, abandoned even by the familiar ground beneath your feet. The image captures something many of us know in hard times, that sense of being cut off not just from others but from our own past stability. Bildad means it as a warning, though if you're in that kind of pain right now, know that God's memory of you doesn't work that way, no matter what your circumstances feel like.
