He shall lean on his house, but it shall not stand. He shall cling to it, but it shall not endure.

What does Job 8:15 mean?

Bildad, one of Job's friends, is describing what happens when someone trusts in something fragile or false instead of in God. The image is of a person desperately holding onto a house that's crumbling, unable to keep it from falling no matter how hard they grip it. Whatever we build our security on—wealth, status, our own strength, or false beliefs—will eventually let us down if God isn't the foundation. Bildad means this as a warning that hollow confidence collapses, even when we cling to it with all our might. For anyone carrying worry right now, this verse can be a gentle reminder to notice what we're actually leaning on, and whether it's something that can really hold us.
