“How long will you not look away from me, nor leave me alone until I swallow down my spittle?”
What does Job 7:19 mean?
Job is expressing raw, desperate exhaustion here. He feels like God is constantly watching and scrutinizing him, never giving him a moment's peace or relief, and he's so worn down that he can't even do something as simple and automatic as swallow without being aware of God's relentless attention. It's a picture of someone so spiritually and physically broken that he experiences even God's presence as oppressive rather than comforting. This comes near the beginning of Job's suffering, when he's still angry and confused rather than resigned. He's not asking for healing or wisdom, just for a little space to breathe, a brief reprieve from feeling constantly judged.
