What does Job 5:4 mean?
Eliphaz is describing what happens when the wicked face God's judgment: their children suffer the consequences too, crushed at the city gate where legal disputes were settled. He's speaking from an ancient worldview where a person's whole household rises or falls with them, and where the gate represented the seat of justice and protection. This is a hard passage to sit with, especially if you're struggling or if your children are hurting. It's worth knowing that Eliphaz uses this image as part of his argument that Job must have done something wrong to deserve his suffering, which the book ultimately rejects. Job's friends were wrong about why bad things happen to good people, and God later corrects them. If you're in a season where this verse stings, know that the full biblical witness offers comfort beyond what Eliphaz could see.
