Job 4:3
“Behold, you have instructed many, you have strengthened the weak hands.”
What does Job 4:3 mean?
Eliphaz is reminding Job of his own good character in this moment, pointing out that Job has been someone who encourages and helps others. He's saying, "Look at what you've done for people, the strength you've given to those who were struggling." It's a generous observation, almost like saying, "You're a good person who knows how to support others." The deeper intention here is complex, though. Eliphaz is setting up his argument that if Job has been this wise and faithful helper to others, surely he should be able to apply that same wisdom to his own suffering. It's meant kindly, but it also carries an assumption that Job's trouble must be his own doing. Sometimes when we're suffering, people remind us of our strengths not out of comfort but to suggest we should be able to fix this ourselves, and that reminder can feel isolating rather than helpful.
