What does Job 4:17 mean?
Eliphaz is challenging Job's assumption that he deserves better treatment from God, suggesting that no human can claim to be more righteous or morally pure than the God who created everything. The question assumes that if God allows suffering, it must be just, because God's character is the standard by which justice itself is measured. Eliphaz means to humble Job by pointing out that humans are finite and flawed, while God is infinite and perfect, so questioning God's fairness is itself a kind of arrogance. It's worth noting that while this statement contains a grain of truth (God is indeed beyond our understanding), the book of Job ultimately shows us that Eliphaz misapplies it, using it to defend himself rather than to comfort his suffering friend.
