What does Job 38:19 mean?
God is asking Job questions that have no straightforward answer, which is the whole point. Light and darkness don't have addresses you can visit or homes you can locate, yet they're real forces that affect everything we see and experience. By asking where these fundamental things "dwell," God is reminding Job that there are mysteries woven into creation itself, things that simply can't be reduced to human logic or complaint. This comes late in Job's ordeal, after he's demanded answers from God about his suffering. Instead of explaining himself, God responds with a series of questions about the natural world, essentially saying: "You don't even understand how the basic workings of creation function, so how can you judge my handling of your circumstances?" It's humbling, but there's also comfort in it, because it suggests that some things operate on a level beyond our need to understand them completely.
