Job 35:7
“If you are righteous, what do you give him? Or what does he receive from your hand?”
What does Job 35:7 mean?
Elihu is asking Job a piercing question here: what could Job possibly offer to God that God lacks or needs? The point isn't to shame Job, but to reset his thinking about how righteousness actually works. When we live rightly, we're not doing God a favor or adding something to him, the way we might help someone in need. This reminds us that our goodness flows back to ourselves and our communities, not upward to fill some void in God. God doesn't gain or lose based on whether we're faithful. That might feel freeing to some (God doesn't keep score like we do), while it might challenge others (our righteousness isn't a currency we can trade). Either way, it reframes what living well really means: not transactional, but transformative for the person living it.
