Job 34:17
“Shall even one who hates justice govern? Will you condemn him who is righteous and mighty?—”
What does Job 34:17 mean?
Elihu is challenging Job here, asking whether someone fundamentally opposed to fairness could actually run things well, or whether Job would dare call a truly righteous and powerful person wicked. The rhetorical questions expect the answer "no"—Elihu wants Job to recognize that God, being both all-powerful and perfectly just, cannot possibly be governing unjustly the way Job has been implying. This lands hard when you're suffering, because it seems to suggest that if God is in charge and God is good, then maybe the pain you're experiencing is deserved or part of some perfect plan. That's not necessarily the comfort this verse intends, though. Even in the midst of Elihu's argument, the book of Job itself keeps opening space for honest confusion and complaint, which is worth holding onto.
