“Where then does wisdom come from? Where is the place of understanding?”
What does Job 28:20 mean?
Job asks these questions after describing all the treasures humans can dig from the earth, all the precious things we can find and possess. Yet wisdom remains elusive, hidden from sight in a way that gold and jewels are not. He's pointing out that no amount of wealth or human effort can simply acquire understanding the way a miner extracts ore from rock. What makes this question so powerful is that Job himself is suffering deeply, stripped of his wealth and health, desperately seeking to understand why. His question reflects the honest confusion many of us feel when we're going through hard times: we know where to look for most things in life, but where do we turn when we need real wisdom about our pain and our circumstances? The answer, Job will eventually discover, is that wisdom comes not from our own searching and striving, but through relationship with God.
