What does Job 28:16 mean?
This verse is part of a poetic passage where Job describes wisdom as something far more precious than any treasure on earth. Gold from Ophir was considered the finest and most valuable in the ancient world, and onyx and sapphire were among the most sought-after gemstones, yet Job insists that even all of these combined couldn't buy wisdom. He's making the point that true wisdom, unlike material wealth, cannot be purchased or measured in earthly terms. It's a reminder that some of the most valuable things in life (understanding, discernment, knowing how to live well) exist beyond what money can reach, which can be deeply comforting when we're struggling financially or when we see others chasing wealth as if it were everything.
