What does Job 26:9 mean?
This beautiful image describes God's hiddenness and majesty all at once. Job is saying that God's throne is wrapped in cloud and darkness, concealing its full glory from our sight. It's the picture of a ruler so great, so "other" than us, that we cannot look directly at the radiance of his presence. Even in Job's suffering, as he wrestles with unanswered questions, he pauses to acknowledge something true: God is magnificent in ways beyond our comprehension. The cloud isn't meant to keep us away out of coldness, but rather to protect us, the way light too bright can hurt our eyes. Sometimes what seems like God's distance is actually a kindness.
