What does Job 21:5 mean?

Job is asking his friends to truly see him, to sit with the weight of what he's experiencing, and to let that sight silence them. When he says to lay a hand on their mouth, he's not being rude; he's essentially saying that what he's going through is so overwhelming that words feel hollow and insufficient. Sometimes the deepest respect we can offer someone in pain is to stop talking and simply witness what they're enduring, letting our shock and sadness be enough.
