What does Job 21:32 mean?

Even when a wicked person dies and is buried with honor, that burial doesn't change anything about their life or its consequences. Job is pointing out that death comes for everyone, regardless of how they lived, and the grave treats all people the same way. The watchers at the tomb can't protect the dead person or alter what they've done, just as no amount of earthly success can shield us from our mortality. In the middle of defending his own innocence, Job reminds us that physical burial practices are temporary rituals, but what matters is what lies beneath them, the truth of who we were and how we lived.
