What does Job 20:29 mean?
Zophar, one of Job's friends, is wrapping up his speech here, declaring that the wicked inevitably lose everything God has given them. He's essentially saying: this is what happens when you live against God's ways, and it's exactly what you deserve. Zophar believes he's explaining the cosmic order, where wrongdoing always leads to ruin and loss. The challenge with Zophar's certainty is that Job himself has been righteous, yet suffering terribly. This verse reminds us how easy it can be to assume we understand God's justice completely, especially when we're looking at someone else's pain from the outside. Sometimes the most compassionate thing we can do is sit with mystery rather than rush to explain why hard things are happening.
