Job 20:22
“In the fullness of his sufficiency, distress shall overtake him. The hand of everyone who is in misery shall come on him.”
What does Job 20:22 mean?
Zophar, one of Job's friends, is describing what he believes happens to the wicked: just when they think they've secured everything and feel completely satisfied, trouble crashes down on them. He's saying that those they've harmed and exploited will eventually turn against them, and all the suffering they caused will circle back. The image is stark and uncomfortable, which makes sense for this moment in the book. Zophar is convinced Job must be guilty of something because, in his view, God's justice is swift and certain. Of course, the whole book of Job challenges this neat theology. Job hasn't done what Zophar assumes, and sometimes suffering doesn't follow the pattern of "bad people get punished." If you're in a hard place and someone has suggested you must deserve it, this verse reminds us that not everyone in Scripture agreed on how God's justice works, and their certainty wasn't always right.
