What does Job 20:15 mean?
Zophar, one of Job's friends, is describing what happens to the wicked person who greedily pursues wealth—they won't be able to keep or enjoy it. The image of swallowing and then vomiting is deliberately unpleasant, meant to show that ill-gotten gains bring no real satisfaction or security. Even when someone accumulates riches through wrongdoing, God will strip those possessions away, leaving them empty-handed and exposed. This speaks to something many of us sense intuitively: that wealth gained through injustice or greed doesn't actually satisfy us the way we thought it would. Whether through God's direct judgment or simply through the natural consequences of living this way, what was greedily consumed ends up being lost. The deeper invitation here is to consider what truly fills us and what we can actually hold onto.
