What does Job 2:6 mean?

God sets a boundary around what Satan is allowed to do to Job. Satan can afflict him physically and take away his possessions, but he cannot kill him—there's a line that won't be crossed. This shows that even in the midst of terrible suffering, God hasn't abandoned his care or lost control of the situation. It's a hard passage because Job's pain is real and devastating, yet it reminds us that our suffering, however intense, exists within limits that God has set and that he remains sovereign even when we're in deep darkness.
