What does Job 18:5 mean?
These words come from Bildad, one of Job's friends, speaking to him during their debate about suffering and justice. Bildad is arguing that wickedness always leads to darkness and destruction, using the image of a light being snuffed out. He's trying to convince Job that if Job is suffering, it must be because of hidden wrongdoing. The verse captures something true about how sin operates spiritually: it isolates us, cuts us off from God's light, and leaves us without guidance or hope. But it's worth remembering that Bildad is making a judgment about Job that turns out to be wrong.
