What does Job 18:17 mean?
Bildad is describing what happens to a wicked person: they're forgotten completely, as if they never mattered at all. No one remembers their name, no one speaks of them in the marketplace or town square where important people are typically discussed and remembered. This cuts deeper than just dying. It's the ancient fear of being erased entirely, of leaving no mark on the world or in people's hearts. For Job, who's already suffering terribly and feeling abandoned by God, these words from his friend must have felt like a threat: lose your standing with God and you lose everything, including your very legacy. It's meant to scare him into admitting wrongdoing, though it only adds to his despair since he knows he hasn't done what his friends claim.
