What does Job 18:13 mean?
Bildad is painting a terrifying picture of what happens to the wicked person, using language about disease and decay consuming the body itself. In the ancient world, this kind of graphic imagery about physical dissolution represented the ultimate loss, the undoing of everything a person is. He's not being literal so much as expressing the idea that wrongdoing catches up with you in the most complete and inescapable way, leaving nothing intact. It's worth knowing that Bildad and the other friends speaking in Job are operating from a strict belief system: if you suffer, you must have sinned, and this is what you deserve. That framework turns out to be wrong in Job's case, which is partly why their speeches, however poetic, ring hollow and ultimately fail to comfort.
