What does Job 15:17 mean?
Eliphaz, one of Job's friends, is trying to convince Job that he speaks from wisdom and experience, not mere opinion. He's saying, in effect, "I've lived long and observed life carefully, and I'm going to share what I've learned with you." The tone sounds confident, even authoritative, which makes sense given that Eliphaz is attempting to justify why Job should accept his explanation for why suffering has come into Job's life. Of course, the irony of the book is that despite Eliphaz's certainty, his conclusions about Job's situation are actually mistaken, reminding us that confidence and experience don't always equal truth, especially when we're making judgments about someone else's pain.
